The nonprofit organization Centro Ecológico Juvenil (CEJ), Ecological Youth Center, was founded in 1990 through an initiative by the teachers college in Sucre and combines an ecological education endeavour with forestry and regional development. Primary objectives of the organization are, reforestation of arid mountain regions in the Andes, general and environmental education, and training in carpentry, tailoring and cooking, all to support and boost the overall living conditions of the local population.
Major undertakings include the Center for Forestry and Education in Cajamarca, the youth hostel and the center for trade crafts in Tarabuco, as well as several smaller projects in the
capitol Sucre. Students of Sucre and volunteers from all over the world support these various efforts with their own special projects and ideas and by participating in the ongoing work of the CEJ.
